What is JEE (Advanced)?
JEE (Advanced) is the second tier of JEE (Main) Examination and the entry ticket to one of the finest engineering colleges in India, IIT, Indian Institute of Technology. Previously known as the Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Examination, the exam is always organised by one of the seven zonal IITs under the direction of JAB, Joint Admission Board.
The said examination is organised once every year offering the aspiring students a chance to compete against each other and get into one of the IITs. In case the students can not crack it in one go, then they can appear for the same again next year.
So, in total, each student can appear for the JEE (Advanced) Examination twice in the two consecutive years.

Who can apply for JEE (Advanced)?
If you are an aspiring candidate who is looking forward to appearing for JEE (Advanced), then you must go through the mentioned eligibility criteria that is required for it:
- The candidate should have appeared for the 10+2 level examination in the year 2020 or 2021 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- In case a candidate appears for the exam in 2019 and the institution declares the results after June 2019, then the candidate can apply for JEE (Advanced) 2021.
- You must rank among the top 2,50,000 students appearing for JEE (Main) Examination.
- The candidates should be born on or after October 1, 1996 to appear for JEE (Advanced) which has 5 years of relaxation for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
- The candidate shall have attempted the JEE (Advanced) Examination for NOT more than one time. Each candidate is allowed two attempts of the exam in total provided that there is no gap between these two.
- The candidate should NOT have had accepted admission in any of the 23 IITs before they appear for their second chance.
- The candidates, who have attempted JEE (Main) /JEE (Advanced) in 2020 or earlier, are NOT ELIGIBLE to appear in JEE (Advanced)–2021.
How to apply for JEE (Advanced)?
When you are finally applying for JEE (Advanced), you are supposed to visit its official website and get done with the simple registration process which involves three steps:
STEP 1: Login with the website and select your prefered centres to appear for JEE (Advanced).
STEP 2: Upload the scanned copies of all the required documents.
STEP 3: Finish the process by paying the registration fees.

All Candidates:
- Class X certificate OR birth certificate for reference about the date of birth.
- Class XII (or equivalent examination) certificate.
- If the name is not same as in the Class X certificate, gazette notification showing the change of name.
GEN-EWS Category:
- GEN-EWS certificate (issued on or after April 01, 2021)
OBC-NCL Category:
- OBC-NCL certificate (issued on or after April 01, 2021)
SC or ST Category:
- Caste (for SC) or tribe (for ST) certificate as per the latest guidelines of the Government of India.
PwD Category:
- Physical Disability certificate (FORM-PwD II/III/IV whichever is applicable]) issued by the notified medical authority.
- Dyslexic candidate needs to submit FORM-DYSLEXIC 1 and 2 where ‘SEVERE’ must be mentioned under the Dyslexia category.
Requirement for Scribe:
- Request letter to the Chairman of the respective zonal coordinating IIT (FORM-SCRIBE).
DS Category:
- Certificate issued by a competent authority in the Directorate of Resettlement and Rehabilitation, New Delhi under the Ministry of Defence or the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India.
What is the scheme and pattern for JEE (Advanced)?
JEE (Advanced) Examination follow a pre-designed pattern for conducting examination and declaring results, here are the key points mentioned below for you to have the idea about the same:
- The candidates are supposed to write two 3-hour long papers under JEE (Advanced).
- The question shall have three separate sections for the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- Comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of the candidates shall be tested through these papers.
- There shall be negative marking whose details will be provided to the candidates at the time of examination.
- The question paper will offer English and Hindi language to the candidates which they can switch anytime during the examination.
- The mode of examination shall be CBT only which stands for Computer Based Test.

Foreign Nationals
Candidates who appeared for their 10+2 level of exam from a foreign institute shall be considered under the mentioned category. However, in case the candidate is not a citizen of India but has appeared for the 10+2 level of examination from an Indian institution, then the candidate shall be considered under the OPEN category irrespective of the fact if they or their parents are OCI/PIO card holders.
Persons with Disabilities (PwD)
JEE (Advanced) allows the candidate to avail the service of a scribe only when he or she is visually impared or dyslexic or has an upper limb disability or has lost fingers or hands. So, while applying for the service, please keep in mind the said criteria.
Rank List of JEE (Advanced)
There are certain things which are kept in the list of essentials while cataloguing the rank list for JEE (Advanced). You should keep these points in mind while appearing for the examination:
- Only candidates appearing for both the papers shall be entertained for the rank list.
- Marks of the single subject in both the exams shall be summed together to come up with the marks obtained by the candidate in a particular subject in JEE (Advanced).
- The aggregated marks in JEE (Advanced) are always the sum total of all the marks obtained by the candidate.
- The rank list is based on the aggregate marks.
- There will be no waiting list for the ranking.

Things to keep in mind while appearing for JEE (Advanced) Examination:
There are certain things which upon taking care of can help you get through with JEE (Advanced) Examination smoothly:
- You shall bring the printed copy of your admit card along with a valid ID proof to the examination hall.
- Candidates shall reach the examination hall at least 2 hours before the commencement of the examination to avoid any hiccups that can eat up the time of the candidate. Also, candidates reaching the examination hall after the allotted time shall NOT be allowed inside the examination hall.
- NO other thing except pens, pencils, drinking water in a transparent bottle, downloaded admit card and an original photo identity card is allowed inside the examination hall.
Once you have scored enough marks to be on the top 2,50,000 students appearing for JEE (Advanced), you shall register with Joint Seat Allocation Authority for the process of getting into your favourite IIT. JoSAA holds the responsibility to allocate all the deserving students in the IITs and other institutes they wish to take admission in. While filling the form for the same, you can choose your preferred course along with the institute you would want to pass out from.
However, if you have not appeared for the first tier of the JEE Examination, then you shall first read about the JEE (Main) Examination as you can not appear for JEE (Advanced) without clearing it.
