UPSC conducts a Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination (CGGE) for recruitment and selection to the post of Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist Group ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India and Junior Hydro-geologist (Scientist ‘B’), Group ‘A’ for The Central Ground Water Board. The last exam notification was released in 2020 for CGGE, 2021.

2. HOW TO APPLY
- Candidates are required to apply Online at www.upsconline.nic.in with a two-step registration process.
- If multiple applications are submitted by mistake, candidates must ensure that the application with the higher Registration ID is complete in all respects like applicants details, examination centre, photograph, signature, fee etc.
- Candidates must be ready with a scanned photograph(max 300 KB size) and signature(max.20 KB size), and one photo ID issued by the Central or State Government before registering for Part II of Registration.
- All candidates, whether already in Government Service, in Government owned industrial undertakings or other similar organizations or in private employment should submit their applications direct to the Commission. Persons already in Government service, whether in permanent or temporary capacity or as work charged employees other than casual or daily rated employees or those serving under the Public Enterprises are, however, required to inform in writing their Head of Office/Department that they have applied for the Examination

Note:
- Master’s degree in respective discipline means the postgraduate degree or postgraduate diploma of minimum two years duration after graduation
- Since there is no vacancy for the posts of Geologist and Geophysicist, these posts have been removed from the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2021. Besides, two new Services have been added in this Examination viz. Scientist-B (Geophysics), Group A and Scientist-B (Chemical), Group A, and the post of Jr. Hydrogeologist (Scientist B) has been renamed as Scientist-B (Hydrogeology)
- No vacancies for PwBD candidates have been reported in the 2020 notification for 2021 recruitment.
Age Criteria
Age-Limit 21 to 32 years
- Candidates must not have attained the Upper age limit on 1st of January of that particular year in which the Examination is to be held.

Points to Remember
- Candidates must possess all the requisite certificates dated earlier than the closing date of the application. Also, If the result of the Qualifying Exam is awaited, they must make sure they produce proof of having passed the examination at the time of filling DAF.
- The EWS candidate applying for Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2021 must produce an Income and Asset Certificate for Financial Year (FY) 2019-2020.
- A candidate who intends to appear at such a qualifying examination may also apply. A candidate who is otherwise qualified but who possesses the Master’s degree from a foreign University approved by the Government may also be admitted to theExamination
- For Mains the venue shall be closed 10 minutes before the scheduled commencement of the Examination. Remember to bring Black Ball Point Pen.
- Carry at least 2 passport-size photographs in case the candidate’s photograph on the Admit Card is blurred or missing( to be pasted on Undertaking).
- Interview of CGGE is designed to assess a candidates’ suitability for the posts. Special attention will be paid to assess candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application, the integrity of character, and aptitude for adapting themselves to the field life.
- Prelims qualified candidates must refer to the Rules of the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination-2021 issued by the Ministry of Mines and the Examination Notice No.1/21-GEOL dated 07.10.2020 issued by the Commission.
- Candidates who cleared the Mains Stage of the Exam must ensure to keep the scanned copies ready to be submitted along with the DAF after the declaration of Mains result.
- Candidates must possess Age Certificate, Educational Qualification documents while Caste Certificate, Certificate in support of claim for age/ fee concession, Certificate in support of being persons with benchmark disability, wherever applicable when submitting the DAF.
- Originals will have to be produced at the time of the Personality Test/Interview.
- The interview letter to the candidates will also be issued electronically.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Job
- Geologists and Geo-Scientists study the materials, processes, and history of the Earth. They investigate how rocks were formed and what has happened to them since their formation. There are sub-groups of geologists as well, such as stratigraphers, who study stratified rock, and mineralogists, who study the structure and composition of minerals. Apart from such core responsibilities a geologist perform additional roles like-
- Supervising the work of technicians and coordinate work with other scientists, both in the field and in the labs.In addition to this, they conduct field studies, in which they visit locations to collect samples and conduct surveys
- Analysis of aerial photographs, and records of geologic formations found during drilling, rock samples, and other data sources to locate natural resource deposits and estimate their size, are also a few of their important roles.
- To make geologic maps and charts prepare written scientific reports and present their findings to clients, colleagues, and other interested parties
- Review reports and research are done by other scientists.
Perks and Benefits of the Job
- Applicants who complete their probation period are employed as full-time workers and will get the benefit of various perks and benefits along with their UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist salary.
- They are generally posted in State Capitals only, although they have to go countryside/hills areas for 4 months of the official field season program every year up to the designation of Senior Geologist.
- Officers of GSI usually gets the same facilities as other Group A services like:
- Economy Class Air Pass or 2nd AC railway tickets for Official visits.
- Entry-level GSI officers posted on Geologist posts are entitled to Type IV quarter (3 BHK) or a decent HRA.
- Senior Geologists are provided with Government Vehicle. Junior Scientists will get Transport Allowance to maintain their own vehicle
- Health Insurance.
