National Institute of Open Schooling is an “Open School” to serve the needs of different groups of learners up to a pre-degree level. It is one of the largest open schooling systems previously known as the national Open school. It is the Board of Education that comes under the Union government of India and was first established in 1989. It was made to increase literacy and to provide flexible learning. NIOS is a national board that takes examinations for secondary and senior secondary examinations and after high school, it provides vocational courses.NIOS is having its headquarters in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

NIOS offers the following courses:-
Open Basic Education Programme, that includes the following three levels of courses
OBE ’A-Level course that is Equivalent to class III
OBE ‘B’ Level course that is Equivalent to class V
OBE ‘C’ Level course that is Equivalent to class VIII
Secondary Course that is Equivalent to class X
Senior Secondary Course that is Equivalent to class XII

How to Register at NIOS

Candidates can register for NIOS Stream 1 by visiting its official website www.nios.ac.in.
For any help in online application visit the nearest AI Center / Study Center.
Online registration can be done from Regional Centers.
For D.EL.ED registration, the teacher’s form is forwarded by the principal in the serving school itself.

Age Limit
The minimum age that is required to appear for the Secondary examination is 14 years completed while there is no upper age limit. But for the benefit of the candidate, the 5th standard qualified candidate can read and write in one of the languages at the time of examination.
The minimum age limit for Senior Secondary is 16 years with a Secondary pass and to complete 24 months before appearing for the examination, while there is no upper age limit.

These are useful for those who are not able to complete their schooling and are not able to do regular studies due to certain reasons. Some who have more interest in sports can take this system of Education.

Eligibility of NIOS
Secondary Course (Secondary Subject) – Class 8th pass mark sheet or self-certificate.
Senior Secondary Course (Higher Secondary Subject) – Photocopy of 10th class mark list passed from any recognized board.
D.EL.ED – The educational qualification for D.EL.ED Admission for Serving Teachers is class 12th pass with 50% marks. For SC/ST/OBC/PH category, 45% marks in class 12th are mandatory.
