ASL- An Initiative By CBSE
It is an initiative launched by CBSE in the year 2012 in all of its affiliated schools.
The ASL test was created to ensure that schools emphasise the importance of students’ listening and speaking skills.
The board hopes that by administering this test as a Summative Assessment, will result in addressing the problem of learners lacking basic communication skills.
The board hopes to empower learners by enhancing their self-esteem and increasing their employability through this effort.
In the ASL test, the listening and speaking skills have separate objectives.
The ASL test’s hearing component assesses the learners’ ability to comprehend simple instructions or academic material.
A collection of four exercises assesses their listening and interpretation skills, employing various media such as advertising, discussions, and news articles.
The meaning presented in the audio is supposed to be deduced and inferred by the students.
The learners’ comprehension of what is being said, the opinion expressed, and the relationship between the speakers is examined by the tasks they complete.
On the other side, the speaking component assesses their ability to communicate in English on a specific topic.
The ASL test evaluates their ability to intonate effectively, speak in a linear fashion, and sound spontaneous when speaking.
The level of vocabulary and the complexity of sentence structures employed by the learners to express themselves are also crucial factors to consider.
Such a concerted effort to provide dedicated opportunities for teaching and learning English as a skill is required not only to provide long-term value to learners in terms of increased confidence and improved career opportunities, but also to meet the short-term goal of performing well on ASL tests.
