IIT-Kanpur launches departments of design, space science and astronomy
The space science and astronomy department will cater to the vast domain of space, planetary, and astronomical sciences and engineering, while the design department is a much-expanded vision of the present design programme.
IIT Kanpur has authorised the creation of two new departments in the subjects of design, space science, and astronomy, bringing the total number of academic departments to 20.
The institute’s design programme, which has been running since 2002, will become the Department of Design. A Bachelor of Design programme is also in the works at the institute. Professor Nachiketa Tiwari, the current Head of the Design Programme, will lead the Design Department.It will have a design cell to meet the industry’s demands in the areas of new product development, product design, engineering design, branding, user experience, and packaging. The programme will begin in 2023.
These two new departments in the domains of design, space science, and astronomy would promote fresh research and innovation in these critical industries and will widen out the ever-expanding scope of study and learning practised at the institute," stated Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur.
The Department of Space Science and Astronomy will focus on space, planetary, and astronomical sciences, as well as engineering.
Both undergraduate and graduate degree programmes (Masters and P.hDs) will be offered by the newly-established department.
