Gujarat schools will begin teaching Vedic mathematics in the coming academic year
Gujarat’s state government has announced that Vedic mathematics, which is supposed to be a simpler and faster technique to answer arithmetic problems, would be included in the school curriculum starting next year.
On the birth anniversary of famed Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, Education Minister Jitu Vaghani made the announcement on Wednesday. On December 22, 1887, Ramanujan was born.
In India, the birthday of great Indian mathematician Ramanujan is commemorated as National Mathematics Day. Vaghani tweeted late at night, “On this occasion, the state government has decided to introduce Vedic math in schools in a phased way.”
The topic will be taught in grades 6 to 10 beginning in the academic year 2022-23 to “spread the Indian Knowledge System as envisioned in the National Education Policy,” according to the ministry.
"Vedic math will help pupils have a better understanding of the topic and enhance their command of it. Vedic math will pique pupils’ interest in the subject "He went on to say that Vedic mathematics is an old Indian approach for simplifying math by combining arithmetic processes into 16 “sutras” or equations.
Vedic mathematics, according to its proponents, reduces the time required to solve complicated problems by lowering the number of steps involved and by providing many solutions.
