LEC or Linguistic Empowerment Cell at JNU is a premier institute in the university campus which is truly dedicated to empowerment and capacity building programs for students who need linguistic skills for their academic path. Students who want to join his cell can opt a slot for the 8 to 10 am or the 4 to 6 pm slot depending on the timing of their regular programs. Most of foreign students from non-English speaking countries are encouraged to do these courses. Every student is awarded a certificate of proficiency after the completion of two successive semesters.

LEC offers foundation courses in English for students who may not have had English as a medium of instruction prior to coming to JNU and who may find it difficult to grasp what is offered in the regular programs in their respective centres and schools. LEC also organizes “Communication Skills in Hindi” for foreign to students as well, so as to enable them to integrate well in the social and cultural life of the campus.

Jebakhatun Yes. LEC also organizes basic courses in Sanskrit for beginners. In accordance with the principles of social justice and empowerment, JNU also organizes special classes twice a week in Indian Sign Language for students, staff, faculty and other JNU-ites, to empower them to communicate with the deaf. Participants are awarded special certificates after the end of the two semester long program.
