About This Scheme

Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the girl child, educate the girl child) is a campaign of the Government of India that aims to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls in India.
It was first launched in 2015 in Panipat,Haryana with an initial funding of ₹100 crore (US$13 million).
This is a joint initiative of Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Objectives

The objectives of this initiative are:

  • Prevention of gender biased sex selective elimination
  • Ensuring survival & protection of the girl child
  • Ensuring education and participation of the girl child

Important Points

  • The Govt of India has formed a National Executive Committee to promote Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) across the country. The committee is organising a number of programs to promote “Save Girl Child” and “to Educate Girl Child” since January 2015.
  • Dr. Rajendra Phadke is the National Convener of BBBP Abhiyan.
  • It is also supported by the Indian Medical Association.

Non-traditional livelihood included in “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” scheme.

Enlarging the instructions of the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” scheme, on tuesday the central government announced the inclusion of artifice (skilling) of girls in Non-Traditional Livelihood (NTL) options in the flagship initiative. Girls are now focused on increasing the enrolment in secondary education, specially in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. While Announcing the inclusion of NTL (Non - Traditional Livelihood) in the scheme, Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani stated, “ Government always encouraged and empowered girls to pursue vocation of their chance irrespective of gender stereotypes”.
