There are various scheme launched by UGC. These are as follows:
1. Higher Education for Persons with Special Needs (HEPSN)
The HEPSN scheme aims to create an atmosphere at higher education institutions that will enrich higher education learning experiences for people with disabilities. The broad types of aid under this scheme include raising knowledge about the capabilities of differently-abled people, building aimed at enhancing accessibility, and the procurement of equipment to enhance learning, among other things.
2. The Teacher Preparation in Special Education (TEPSE)
The scheme aims to help Departments of Education in launching special education teacher preparation programmes that will prepare special educators to educate children with disabilities in both special and inclusive settings. The programme subsidises the cost of B.Ed. and M.Ed. degree programmes with a specialty in one of the handicap areas. The TEPSE schemes have a specific goal of encouraging universities to launch M.Ed. special education courses in order to prepare teacher-educators to work at higher education institutions that offer special education teacher preparation courses.
3. Financial Assistance to Visually Challenged Teachers
The Scheme was created to assist visually impaired permanent teachers in pursuing teaching and research with the assistance of a Reader and by using teaching and learning aids by providing a Reader’s Allowance and funds for the purchase of Braille books, recorded materials, and other items, as well as to assist such teachers in achieving self-sufficiency through the use of various teaching, learning, and research aids. Financial help is given under the scheme to universities and institutions that fall under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956 and are eligible to receive central aid under Section 12B.
4. National Fellowship for Persons with Disabilities
The University Grants Commission (UGC), on behalf of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), invites applications from eligible candidates for the National Fellowship for Persons with Disabilities (NFPwD) for the selection years 2018-19 and 2019-2020. Students with disabilities who are protected by the “Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights, and Full Participation) Act, 1995” will be eligible for fellowships under this programme. As a result, a person with a handicap who intends to receive benefits under the Act must first get a disability certificate from a medical authority designated for that purpose.
