About STARS

It is a programme for promoting translational, India-centric research in Sciences.
It is implemented and managed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
Its key objective is to promote socially relevant research.
The following 6 basic thrust areas have been identified:

  • Physical Sciences
  • Chemical Sciences
  • Biological Sciences
  • Nanosciences
  • Data Science and Mathematics
  • Earth Sciences

Major Objectives

  1. Through a competitive process that is open and transparent, to fund translational research initiatives that have direct repercussions for the country’s progress.
  2. The basic idea would be to assess a current problem and go backwards to do research for a solution.
  3. Promoting an inter-disciplinary and translational research method for improved synergy, de-duplication, and comprehensiveness and relevance of research.
  4. Orient science toward addressing the country’s needs and concerns in critical sectors such as health, agriculture, energy, the environment, and security, among others.
