Delhi University will reopen on February 17 for all courses and semesters following severe demonstrations.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, February 9, the Registrar of Delhi University, Rajni Abbi, stated that the university will reopen completely for all classes on February 17. This came after students from several organizations intensified their rallies calling for the college to reopen.
The date was verbally stated, and the Registrar also wrote a letter to the DU Students’ Union, which had given the university until 3 p.m. today to reopen the campus or face an indefinite hunger strike, and had begun an indefinite hunger strike on February 8. If their demands were not met, the students threatened to shut down the college. While the message did not specify a date, the Registrar assured students that the university would reopen “very soon” and that an official statement would be made by the evening on the university’s website.
Since the second wave began last year, Delhi University has been closed. Protests to reopen the varsity have also swept the campus in December 2021. However, Delhi’s smog and the start of the pandemic’s third wave put a halt to their plans. Students began demanding the reopening of campus again this month, as instances subsided and COVID limitations were eased.
