Normally the Board prescribes NCERT textbooks for Classes 9, 10, 11 and 12. Examination or assessment will be done based on the syllabus provided by the Board and not as given in the NCERT Books.
And in case of CBSE While the majority of students and even CBSE schools promote other side books, CBSE never does so. In reality, CBSE will always advise you to study NCERT books because they include the majority of the questions. These books will more than suffice to cover the whole CBSE curriculum.
