The National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture and Utilisation (NCOE-CCU) has been created at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
This Centre of Excellence investigates and realises the potential of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology to help India meet its climate goals and commitments.
According to an IIT Bombay announcement, the NCOE-CCU is the country’s first such DST-funded centre. In December 2021, it was formally approved.
Several academic and research institutes (such as other IITs, universities, and CSIR labs) as well as companies such as petroleum, cement, power, and steel have formed relationships with the NCOE.
The NCOE will serve as a focal point for cutting-edge research and application-oriented activities in the field of CCUS.
DST wants to grow the field of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage by focusing on research and development, as well as human resource and infrastructural capacity building.
The goal is to develop technologies and approaches that address concerns such as high capital costs, safety, logistics, and auxiliary power usage.
