According to data released by the Ministry of Education in response to a query submitted by Congress member Shashi Tharoor in the Lok Sabha, over 40% of teaching positions in all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are empty.
According to the data, there are 4,370 vacant teaching faculty positions in the IITs, despite the fact that there are 6,511 teaching faculty in the IITs.
The results once again revealed the underrepresentation of teachers from underrepresented groups. Only 12% of the 6,511 teachers are from the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes, and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). The Ministry did not publish a breakdown of faculty strength by category. However, according to a previous response from December 2021, there were only 32 faculty members from ST, 183 from SC, and 462 from OBC Communities.
