Meghaadhikari About this Repository This portal provides an all-pervasive and integrated access to theme-based collections and artefacts irrespective of the physical and geographical locations of museums. The portal showcases India’s rich cultural past through a variety of digital collections that include sculptures, paintings, manuscripts, weaponry, coins, and a variety of other items. For students, instructors, researchers, and even tourists, virtual museums provide a wealth of information that can be accessed from anywhere and at any time. For the first time in the world, ten national museums are available online through a single platform. The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is funding this project. The JATAN: Virtual Museum Builder-created digital collections have been placed into the national digital repository for public access via the national site. The Ministry of Culture has embarked on an ambitious project to digitise the collections of the museums under its jurisdiction, with the dual goals of maximising the use of technology in museum management and bringing these museums’ collections closer to the public by making them available for online viewing via the internet. Through the technological knowledge of the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C –DAC) Pune and the Art Institute of Chicago, the Ministry of Culture was able to obtain standardised software dubbed “Jatan” for use in its museums.
