About DGT
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’s Directorate General of Training (DGT) is the top organisation for national development and coordination of vocational training programmes, including Women’s Vocational Training.
State governments or union territory administrations have administrative and budgetary control over industrial training institutes.
DGT also runs Vocational Training Schemes through field institutes under its direct direction in certain of the specialised fields.
The DGT is responsible for developing these programmes at the national level, particularly in the areas of common policies, uniform standards and processes, instructor training, and trade testing.
The State Governments/Union Territories Administrations are in charge of the day-to-day administration of Industrial Training Institutes.
Roles And Responsibilities
- To develop broad rules, norms, and standards for vocational education.
- In terms of craftsmen and crafts instructor training, to diversify, modernise, and extend training facilities.
- At the specially formed training Institutes, plan and conduct specialist training and research.
- Under the Apprentices Act of 1961, to execute, regulate, and expand the scope of apprenticeship training.
- Women’s vocational training programmes should be organised.
- To give career counselling and job placement assistance.
- Enhance the capacities of scheduled castes/tribes and persons with disabilities for wage employment and self-employment.
