There are two dimensions to the pay matrix. It has a “horizontal range” in which each level corresponds to a “functional position in the hierarchy” and is numbered 1, 2, 3, and so on. Each level’s “vertical range” represents the ‘pay progression’ within that level.
Salary scales are divided into grades, and your grade is determined by your position. Each year, you should progress one point higher on the scale until you reach the top of your class. This is referred to as an annual pay increase.
