Until yesterday I was confused about how sociology is different from anthropology. After going through a lot of articles, net surfing, I arrived at the following points. They’re:
- Sociology is a social science that investigates society, its structure, relationships, interactions, and other aspects of daily life. Anthropology, on the other hand, is a social science that analyses human beings in terms of their origins, development, and behaviour.
- Sociology is concerned with the interdependence of people, i.e. society. Anthropology, on the other hand, is concerned with human beings and their ancestors, and how they evolved, adapted, interacted with one another, and differed from other species.
- While sociologists study human behaviour in terms of causes and effects at a group or societal level, anthropologists study human behaviour at the individual level.
- Sociology seeks to solve social problems by enacting policies. The major goal of anthropology, is to learn about human diversity and cultural differences.
- Modern and ancient societies, are studied in sociology. Anthropology, on the other hand, only studies preliterates, or uncivilised, old, and primitive societies.
Now according to me, sociology has more career options than anthropology. It has options like Administrative support, Rehabilitation Counsellor,, Survey Researcher, Human Resources (HR) Specialist, etc. Also I have seen it has a shorter syllabus and easier to understand than anthropology.
