Peers are persons who have the same age, rank or capacity, they are friends or companions who we come across in approximate equality and with whom we learn, talk, compare ideas and do things together.
What is Peer Counselling?
Peer Counselling is an interactive relationship between age groups to influence positive change. (Bette 2013). It is a process where the peers, i.e. colleagues, discuss their issues amicably without engaging in reprehensible behaviour and, consequently, improving their academics.
Peer counselling is a helping process where one-on-one intentional interaction happens between members of a group with several things in common.
Benefits of Peer-Counselling
- Conflict Resolution Assistance: When students face several challenges and are uncomfortable seeking help from teachers or elders. They may need someone to discuss freely with and get an answer. In such a scenario, peer conflict solving is the most effective benefit of peer counselling.
- Learn from Peers: Peer Counsellors through their experience can solve any problem efficiently. Also, students can learn from the experiences of their peers and get help resolving their own.
- Obtain help or support: Students often seek a certain amount of support/assistance and need someone to share everything to result in a sound support system and help the students.
- Provides Safe space: Peer counsellors are trained to ensure that it is a safe place where students can share anything they want. They are non-judgemental.
