How Often Should One Renew Their Disability Certificate?
In India, the validity period of a disability certificate and its renewal requirements depend on the type of disability and the issuing authority’s guidelines. Here’s a general overview:
1. Permanent Disability Certificates
- No renewal required if the disability is permanent and non-progressive (e.g., amputation, severe visual impairment).
- The certificate is usually valid for a lifetime, but some states may require re-verification after a few years (for example, 5–10 years) to confirm no improvement.
2. Temporary or Progressive Disabilities
- If the disability is temporary or likely to change (e.g., certain mental health conditions, recovering injuries), the certificate may have an expiry date (for example, 1–5 years).
- Renewal requires a fresh medical examination by a certified disability board.
How to Renew
- Visit the same or an authorized medical board (usually at government hospitals).
- Submit the previous certificate, medical reports, and ID proof.
- Undergo a fresh assessment (if required).
- Receive an updated certificate with a new validity period.
- UDID Card (apply through the Swavlamban Scheme): Updating your UDID online after renewal is mandatory.
