Women are formally allowed to join Indian Army since 1992 into the Officer Cadre. So far more than 1200 Lady officers have already been commissioned into the various Arms and Services of the Indian Army.

There is still a lot of confusion regarding women being allowed in Indian Army or not?

  • Can a girl join Indian Army after 12th?
  • Can a girl join Officers Training Academy (OTA)?
  • Can a female join Indian Army?
  • Can a female become Soldier?
  • What job opportunities are there for females in Indian Army?
  • What kind of job can a female do in Indian Army?
  • Can a Woman Join Special forces?
  • Are women allowed to participate in Indian Recruitment rally?

I don’t have full information to answer all questions but if we start discussing about this topic, every girl aspiring to join Indian Army will get great help and plan towards her goal.

After 12th Women can join National Defence Academy. Earlier women were not allowed to join the NDA but last year Supreme Court asked the Ministry of Defence to make reservation for women in NDA.

Recently Captain Abhilasha Barak became the first woman combat aviator in the Indian army and the first woman to join the Army Aviation Corps as a helicopter pilot after the completion of one of year course at the Combat Army Aviation Training School at Nashik in Maharashtra.

Of course, women can join the Indian Army through
    CDS(After graduation)
NCC(After graduation with an NCC grade B certificate)
    NDA(After 12th with maths & physics)
    SSC Tech (After Engineering)
to give permission for females in the Indian army proved to be a good decision.

SonaliSingh There is no reservation for Women in Indian army as they are recruited for services to help during war. Though we do have relaxations for special categories which are as follows:

    a) 5% reservation has been provided to widows of defence personnel for short service Commission Women (Technical and Non technical), out of this 2.5% of the notify vacancy is reserved forSSCW (Non- Technical) and remaining 2.5 % for SSCW (Tech). The application for SSCW (NT) is directly routed through Recruiting Directorate and the candidate need not appear for CDSE.
    b) 4 Yrs relaxation in upper age has been granted to the widows of defence personnel for SSCW (Tech & Non Tech).
    c) Widows of Defence personnel, with/without children, can apply. For others only unmarried women candidates are eligible to apply.
    d) 10% vacancies have been earmarked for wards of battle casualties, out of fixed vacancies of NCC entry. Mandatory eligibility criteria of NCC ‘C’ certificate has been dispensed with.

@PriyanjaliSingh Yes, Females are allowed to join the force from the OTA exam. And the CDS eligibility for females is different than for men. The CDS physical eligibility for a female is:

      1. Has to be at least 19 years old before writing the exam and cannot be more than 25 years old whilst appearing for the exam.
      2. The candidate can be unmarried, widowed or divorced and has not remarried.
      3. Tattoos are allowed only on the inner elbow to the wrist area and the back of the palm. Tattoo anywhere else will lead to disqualification
      4. Women need to have a minimum height of 148 cm

Until last year there was no room for women in the National Defence Academy. But from this year onward MoD has given reservation to women candidates in NDA as well. Role of Women in Armed Forces has consistently been increasing. The Indian Air Force has given the combat role to women. Last year Assam Rifles deployed its women soldiers along the LOC.
Hopefully soon Indian Army will also recruit women soldiers for combat roles.

Here are some notable achievements of women in the Indian Armed Forces:
