UPSC Mains examination has been Scheduled from today onwards(16th of September). The First Paper was Essay writing to test the Thinking capacity of the aspirants along with their temperament towards Life and Society. Every year it surprises us with the uniqueness of its topics asked in the question paper. Here I’d like to discuss every single topic asked for the year 2022. If I would try an insight of comparison with the last year Question Paper, I would find myself more comfortable this year. If I say that majority of the last year topics were Bouncer then I found it a Full Toss Ball in a dry pitch in a sunny day. Examiner helped us with the proverbs asked as topics along with few Philosophical topics. Likewise the relevant topic from section A was-

  1. A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ship is for.

I’m pretty sure that it must be the choice of maximum candidates as they will found themselves more comfortable with this topic. As the number of UPSC aspirants are from varied disciplines, they may not opt that fancy philosophical writing skills. If I talk further, the most relevant topics in section B were-

  1. The time to repair the roof is when Sun is shining.
  2. You can not step twice in the same river.

The ship is for the Adventures of the seas. The harbour is not the place where it suits to be. Let the sailor feel the air of the seas and the ride the waves of the ocean.

We often call UPSC as Unpredictable Public Service commission but are we seeing a pattern of kind of essays being asked by UPSC? I don’t see this essay paper much different from last year’s philosophical overdose, but with an extra pinch of some famous quotes that we didn’t do much brainstorming over, except using them as our morning motivational status/wallpaper on whatsapp or whatever social media platform we use.

Coming to the paper, This paper presents a dilemma of selection of essay. Don’t choose an essay just by looking at it and getting some random related thoughts because a question that seems short and easy most often makes things complicated when being answered. so this essay paper perfectly sums up that Just because you have a choice, it does not mean any of them has to be right.

But we can take help of some basics to know if the choice is right. A right choice is not the one that seems quite heard of or natural to you but one where,

    1. You are able to think at least of some GOOD examples.
    2. You can give a good eye catching start to your essay.
    3. You can soon prepare a structure that has a good flow.
    4. you are able to relate it to few dimensions of syllabus part of Mains, especially Historical, social and ethical if its a philosophical essay.

So considering above points my choice would be to go with following.
    Section A

    1. History is a series of victories won by the scientific man over the romantic man.
    2. A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ship is for.

    Section B

    1. The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.
    2. Just because you have a choice, it does not mean that any of them has to be right.

Also soon I’ll be coming up with approach for each of these essays that will contain not only initial structure mind maps but also full answers. watch this space.

Seeing the Essay paper of last year and this year, it’s clear that Abstract Essays in UPSC CSE is the way forward.
They are checking your thinking skills. And… language matters. To understand the topic and to write too,
Reading has to go beyond regular GS books and reading processed CA material as you cannot attempt such question only by locking yourself in a room and gulping down the throat all the subject books.
Philosophy , Sarcasm , Humour , Common Sense and emotional intelligence, you need it all in this paper.
    Essays will become decisive.
