About
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015.
Parameters
In order to be ranked, all education institutions are assessed on five parameters:
- Teaching, learning and resources: These parameters are related to the core activities of any place of learning.
- Research and professional practices: Excellence in teaching and learning is closely associated with the scholarship.
- Graduation outcomes: This parameter forms the ultimate test of the effectiveness of the core teaching/learning..
- Outreach and inclusivity: The Ranking framework lays special emphasis on representation of women.
- Perception: The ranking methodology gives a significant importance to the perception of the institution

Salient Features
Methodology is based on developing a set of metrics for ranking of academic institutions, based on the parameters agreed upon by the core committee.
The parameters are organised into five broad heads, and have been further elaborated into suitable sub-heads. Each broad head has an overall weight assigned to it. Within each head, the various sub-heads also have an
appropriate weight distribution. To ensure transparency, emphasis is on identifying data that the institution can easily provide or is easy to obtain from third party sources and easily verifiable, where verification is needed.
A suitable metric is used on this data, which computes a score under each sub-head.
The institutions can then be rank-ordered based on their scores.
