DU issues notification to discontinue M.Phil from next academic session
In accordance with the National Education Policy-2020, the Delhi University has issued a notification announcing that M.Phil will be phased out beginning with the next academic session. From 2022 to 2023, the university will apply the policy.
However, several teachers have criticized the decision to end the degree, claiming that it will be detrimental to students who are not financially secure, including women.
Abha Dev Habib, a former member of the Executive Council, stated, “The goal of NEP-2020 is to expand the gap between the haves and the have-nots. Either pursue a Ph.D. or do not pursue a research degree. The NEP, which is based on the marketing of ‘choice,’ is robbing students of actual options. Students from low-income backgrounds looked to the M.Phil. as a research degree they could afford before pursuing teaching careers.”
“This degree (M.Phil) is being phased out because of NEP-2020, not because of any inherent necessity of the system,” she explained.
