However, because Ph.D. programs in India are typically competitive, universities use entrance exams, interviews, and research proposal evaluation to choose the finest candidates.
Individual schools and universities are generally free to manage this procedure on their own, but most of them follow the same fundamental processes.
They either accept the results of a test conducted at the national level (such as NTA UGC NET, CSIR-UGC NET) or at the state level (such as RET of various institutions) or they conduct their own tests.
