Individual schools and universities are generally free to manage this procedure on their own, but most of them follow the same fundamental processes.
They either accept the results of a test conducted at the national level (such as NTA UGC NET, CSIR-UGC NET) or at the state level (such as RET of various institutions) or they conduct their own tests.
