The Central Government, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the PM SHRI Schools (PM ScHools for Rising India). This will be a new scheme for development of more than 14500 schools across the country as PM SHRI Schools by strengthening select existing schools being managed by Central Government/ State/ UT Government/ local bodies. PM SHRI Schools will showcase all components of the National Education Policy 2020, act as exemplar schools and also offer mentorship to other schools in their vicinity. The PM SHRI schools will deliver quality teaching for the cognitive development of students and will strive to create and nurture holistic and well-rounded individuals equipped with key 21st century skills.
Important Factors
PM SHRI Schools will provide leadership to other schools in their respective regions by providing mentorship.
In accordance with the NEP 2020 vision, PM SHRI will offer high-quality instruction in a just, welcoming, and happy learning environment that considers children’s varied backgrounds, multilingual needs, and range of academic abilities and encourages them to take an active role in their own education.
The PM SHRI Schools will be developed as Green schools, incorporating environment friendly aspects like solar panels and LED lights, nutrition gardens with natural farming, waste management, plastic free, water conservation and harvesting, study of traditions/practices related to protection of environment, climate change related hackathon and awareness generation to adopt sustainable lifestyle.
A School Quality Assessment Framework (SQAF) is being developed, specifying the key performance indicators to measure outcomes. Quality evaluation of these schools at regular interval will be undertaken to ensure the desired standards.
The learning outcomes of every student in every grade will be the main focus. Assessments will be competency-based and based on conceptual comprehension as well as the application of knowledge to actual circumstances.
Major Challenges for PM SHRI Schools Scheme
Quality and Innovation (Learning Enhancement Programme, Holistic Progress Card, Innovative Pedagogies, Bagless days, Internships with Local artisans, Capacity building etc.)
Encouraging flexibility in choice of subjects offered to students.
Strengthening of existing infrastructure
Encouraging mother tongue/local languages as medium of instruction using technological interventions to help bridge language barriers.
Vocational interventions & Enhancing internship / entrepreneurship opportunities especially with local industry. Mapping of skills with developmental projects/nearby industry and develop courses/curriculum accordingly.
Why in News?
Today, On October 25, 2022, The School Education Department of the Arunachal Pradesh Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union Ministry of Education to establish the PM SHRI schools and strengthen the infrastructure of existing schools managed by the state.
Under the visionary scheme of PM SHRI schools, schools that are managed by state government will be upgraded with innovative pedagogy and technology. These schools will create a natural holistic surrounding for an individual equipped with 21st century skills.
